In 1997, the last iron ore mine in Lorraine, which once produced over 50 million tonnes of iron, was closed. Because of a shortage of production capacity, the ferrous metallurgy sector had experienced a strong decline. Therefore, the Region of Lorraine is now focused on its industrial development and logistics at the edge of the Moselle river from Frouard, Metz and Illange. Logistics already play a key role in the development of this Region, and will continue to do so on a long term basis. Actually, various multimodal logistics parks projects are about to improve the river and rail transport solutions.
